A “misconfiguration error” in the Website Overview tab of your LyteHosting Customer Portal usually means the connection between your website’s files and database is broken. This can prevent your site from loading properly and lead to issues like:

  • WordPress not loading.
  • Database connection errors.

If your website wasn’t intentionally deleted, follow the steps below to fix the misconfiguration error and get your website back online.

NOTE:

  • Some websites may show a “misconfiguration” message in the Customer Portal, while others may not appear at all.
  • If a website doesn’t show up in the portal, our internal tools can still detect it.
  • Websites that are not visible in your Customer Portal do not count toward your hosting plan’s site limit.

Common Causes of Misconfiguration Errors

Here are the most common reasons you may see a misconfiguration error:

  • Malware or suspicious files.
  • Missing or corrupted WordPress core files.
  • Recent changes to plugins, themes, or file permissions.
  • Accidental deletion of critical files.
  • Database connection problems.

How to Fix a Misconfiguration Error

Resolving this issue usually involves restoring your website’s structure, checking for corrupted files, and rolling back recent changes. Below are some practical steps you can take to repair the error and bring your site back online.

1. Scan Your WordPress Site for Malware

Malware can interfere with your site’s structure and prevent it from loading.

  • Use a malware scanner to check your files.
  • Look for suspicious or recently modified files.
  • If malware is found, remove the infected files or contact LyteHosting Support for assistance.

2. Restore from a Backup

Restoring your website to a previously stable version is often the quickest fix.

  • Check your hosting dashboard or any backup plugins for available restore points.
  • If you use a backup tool (like JetBackup, UpdraftPlus, or another WordPress backup plugin), select a backup from a working date.
  • For manual restore, upload your saved ZIP backup and re-import it to recover your content.

Regular backups are essential to protect against permanent data loss.

3. Verify WordPress Core Files

If key WordPress files are missing or corrupted, your site may not load.

Ensure your root directory contains the following:

  • wp-config.php
  • index.php
  • .htaccess

If any of these files are missing:

  • Download the latest WordPress package from wordpress.org.
  • Upload the core WordPress files to your server, but exclude the wp-content folder to avoid overwriting themes and plugins.
  • Keep your original wp-config.php file to preserve your website’s settings.

4. Review Recent Changes

Think back to any recent updates you’ve made, such as:

  • Installing or updating plugins and themes.
  • Changing file permissions.
  • Manually editing or deleting files.

If a recent action caused the error:

  • Undo the change if possible.
  • Reinstall or re-upload missing/deleted files.

How to Prevent Misconfiguration Errors in the Future

While errors can happen, you can greatly reduce the chances of running into misconfiguration problems by following these best practices:

  • Keep WordPress Updated: Always run the latest version of WordPress, along with updated plugins and themes, to avoid compatibility issues.
  • Use Reliable Plugins and Themes: Only install plugins and themes from trusted sources to minimize risks of corrupted files.
  • Perform Regular Backups: Schedule daily or weekly backups of your site files and database. This ensures you can quickly restore your website if anything goes wrong.
  • Scan for Malware Regularly: Use a WordPress security plugin or hosting-level scanner to detect threats early.
  • Avoid Unnecessary File Edits: Be cautious when editing core files or permissions. Small mistakes can lead to major errors.
